About Me

Aniekan Sampson Brown, was born on September 06, 1969, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria (where I hail from). My parents were both teachers at the time. Influenced by the nomadic nature of my parents’ career, I attended several primary schools until I obtained my First School Leaving Certificate in 1981. I attended the Lutheran High School, Obot Idim, Ibesikpo-Asutan from where I obtained the General Certificate for Education (GCE) in 1986.

For my tertiary education, I bagged my first degree (B.Sc.) in Sociology & Anthropology from the then University of Cross River State, Uyo – Nigeria in 1991. And in 1998, I obtained a Master’s Degree (M.Sc.) in Rural Sociology & Community Development from the University of Uyo – Nigeria. I finally bagged a Doctor of Philosophy Degree (Ph.D.) in Criminology from the University of Port Harcourt – Nigeria in 2006.

As an academic staff with the Department of Sociology & Anthropology, University of Uyo, I am an expert in criminology. My other areas of academic interest include: mass media, gender, development, drug issues, organization and institutional analysis. I have been serving as the Acting Dean, Student Affairs Division of the University since October 27, 2017 and served as Chairman or member of many Pauls of Enquiry in the University; I am also an appointee of the Federal Government of Nigeria on the Governing Council of the Bayero University, Kano since May 09, 2017.

I consider myself as an amicable character with a noticeable penchant for higher academic attainment and community development. I am also a member of many professional bodies, including the Nigerian Sociological/ Anthropological Association (NSAA), the Nigerian Society of Criminologists (NSC), The Social Science Association of Nigeria (SSAN), The International Society for Development and Sustainability (ISDS), and Fellow of the National Association of Criminologists and Security Practitioners (NACSP).

I am presently the Zonal Coordinator of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Calabar (ASUU-CALABAR ZONE). It may be interesting to note that I enrolled in the Boys Brigade, 9thUyo Company in 1979 and rose to become the Captain in 1993; a youth organization which I am a member of the Akwa Ibom State Patrons Council.

I am a Christian, married to Abasiama, and the marriage is blessed with two daughters, namely: Vida and Raphela. In terms of hubbies, I am given to sports journalism, social analysis, youth development, community development, and classical music.
